Levelling up

From our desks we look out over planes, trains, automobiles and ferries so we’ve become quite expert traffic watchers. For some of us this has extended into downloading the shipping app but this week someone took it to the next level.

Yup, we now have a telescope.

Bindings

One of the joys of working where I do is the chance to share in the passions of expert staff and marvel at the weird and wonderful things that some people make their life’s work. Like the intimate study of the stamps on medieval leather bound books such as these which we got to get up close and personal with.

Travelling

January has disappeared in a flurry of travel, some for work but mostly for fun.  Seems crazy but I was in all these places over a very busy three weeks .

It Begins

A small number of us were back in the office this week but we somehow managed to hang on to the slightly relaxed summer vibe. The view might have helped, or maybe not.

The Plan

The plan for my week off over New Year was to tackle one room a day and get some things sorted. As with all good plans it hasn’t gone that way but stuff has been sorted and most importantly, thrown out.

There’s also been a car load delivered to the Sallies and another one planned because the downside of being a good packer is lots of things hiding in corners.

Real Deal

My Pōhutukawa is in full flower. Merry Christmas.

Trees

There’s a decorating competition at work and our corner of the office is taking it very seriously. There are lights, bunting, (fake) festive fare and not one but two ‘Christmas’ trees.

A palm tree from our Pasifika staff and a Pōhutukawa from our Māori team.

Interactive Decorating

The lovely cafe down the street that has the naughty corner now has their Christmas decorations up, at perfect head height if you sit in the window.

This was taken early enough that all the coffees were takeaway but great fun for later in the day.

Wait Over

Remember this from a few weeks ago?

It could have been pretty much anything but turns out it’s the base for some shiny new signage

Tip Top

Neither of us are looking particularly great but annual check confirms one of us is in tip top condition.

Going North

I’m just back from a week in the Far North at a librarian’s hui. Amazing stories, fantastic learning from colleagues and we were very well looked after.

It’s A Sign

Reverse parked, boots up, gear accessible can only mean one thing, weavers are in the house.

Spiders

I spent last weekend at the biannual weavers hui in Rotorua. It was massive, exhausting, inspiring and I took almost no photos because I kept forgetting.

This week was Halloween and creative types have been leaning heavily into the spiders.

New Tech

I finally have earbuds and the best part is that, in their charging case, they look remarkably froggy.

Decisions

This is what decision making looks like in our current crazy weather.

Circles of wet paw prints as Huia decides whether it’s an inside day or an outside day. Several valiant attempts at going out but I suspect I know which will win.

Springing

It’s properly spring which means a quick succession of wind, rain, sunshine and drizzle, often in combination.  The final sign is the clematis over the bins being in flower.

Bearly There

It’s been a busy week mostly out of the office. Two days at the big national libraries conference and another day with international visitors. I haven’t conferenced in years so it took me a bit to get back in the groove but once I did it was fantastic. Fabulous to see librarians from previous lives, catch up on all the news and hear from inspiring speakers. Plus there was swag so I’m now well stocked up on notebooks, pens and support bears.

A Thing

Not sure what kind of a thing but two of these have appeared at work in the past week and are now just waiting.

Curtains

Literally and figuratively. The painters have been in and out all week which has meant my kitchen has been curtained off so they can do the ceiling and just the ceiling. It also means curtains to the work to find and fix the leak. It’s such a good job you’d never guess the drama.

No More Gaps

Very slowly the hole in my kitchen ceiling is being dealt to. Several days of rain confirmed the fix was good so the boards were patched then this week we have plaster.
